This area (Adashino) was a graveyard in old days. between 810 and 824, the high priest Kukai established a temple called Gochizan-nyoraiji Temple in Adashino.
Thereafter, the high priest Honen converted into a temple of the Jodo sect and renamed Nenbutsuji.
Today, the precincts of this temple is filled with numerous stone Buddhist images of excavated around the temple.
Sento Kuyo festival is held on the 23rd and 24th of August every year.
Sento Kuyo means "1,000 candle-lights offering".
Actually, candlelight is offered to each about 8000 stone Buddhist images.
