This temple is the head temple of the 21 temples of Kyoto's Hokke sect.
It was founded by the saint Nichizo in Kamakura Period.
After the conflagration in 1788 , the present hall was rebuilt.
Paintings on the sliding doors created by the Hasegawa Tohaku School were presented to this temple by Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
Moreover, there is sutra "The Rissho Ankokuron" that Honami Koetsu copied.
It is designated as a Important Cultural Asset.
