Kitano Tenmangu Shrine dedicated to Sugawara Michizane. This Shrine was founded in 947 after Michizane's death. This Shrine is also known as KitanonoTenjinsan.
Sugawara Michizane is born into scholar's house, becomes sentence doctor, and when it is a Daigo emperor, is promoted to the Minister of the Right. Today, Tenjinsan is god of study. And a lot of students visit the KitanonoTenjinsan every year. Especially, the examinee visits a lot.
The current main hall and the worshippers' hall was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1607. The worshippers' hall is designated as a National Treasure. It is renowned as fine example of structures from the Momoyama period.
There is "The Plum Blossom Festival" on February 25 at the anniversary of Michizane's death, and the tea ceremony by the geiko and maiko in Kamishichiken is done.
