In 863, this shrine was founded to deified eight divine spirits. They all had died in unfortunate circumstances.
This shrine was originally built in the south of the Goryo Shrine in Izumoji area. And it was called Shimo-goryo Shrine. “Shimo” means south.
In 1590 it was moved to its present site following the order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
