This temple is the head temple of the Enjo sect of the Buddhism. In 1573 this temple was moved to its present site from Mt. Funaoka after the Onin War.
Murasaki Shikibu (794 to 1192) lived in here, and it is said that she wrote the Tale of Genji here.
The garden in front of the main hall is called as garden of Genji.
The monument of the remains of Murasaki Shikibu's residence stands in garden of Genji.
The "Onino Horaku Festival" is held on February 3 to pray for the dispersion of diseases.
