Go-o jinja

Deifies Wake-no-Kiyomaro (733-799) a man who contributed to construction of Heiankyo.
The koma-inoshishi (carved boar guarding the shrine) and a collection of boar statues associated with the deity still grace the shrine.
The shrine was moved to its present location from Jingoji Temple precincts in 1886.
GOO-Matsuri (Grand Festival) on April 4 marks the coming to power of the Meiji Emperor and the anniversary of Wake-no-Kiyomaro's death.
Inoshi Matsuri (November 1) is based on a Heian Court ritual for protection from illness and disaster.
It is a colorful snapshot of the Heian Court.
Rice cakes prepared during the ritual are presented to the Imperial Palace and spectators.
