Shosei-en is the villa of the Higashi Honganji.
This is also known as the "Kikokutei".
The name Kikokutei stems from the surrounding hedge of trifoliate orange.
Hongan-ji Temple priest Sennyo landscaped this garden with the aid of scholar Ishikawa Jozan and others in 1653.
