Tofukuji temple is the head temple of Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism.
This temple was founded by Fujiwarano Michiie in 1236.
He wanted to erect a temple as large as Todaiji and Kofukuji.
The temple was completed in 1256.
The Sanmon gate was built in the early Muromachi period.
It is the oldest Sanmon gate of Zen style.
It is designated as National Treasure.
The Zendo hall (mediatation hall), Tosu (lavatory) and bathroom were all built in the Muromachi period.
They are all structures of Zen style.
They are designated as Important Cultural Assets.
Visitor can enjoy a wonderful autumn tint from "Tsuten-kyo" bridge in autumn.
