Shimabara1

Undertaking the revival of Kyoto, Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave permission for establishment of an entertainment district around the intersection of Nijo Street and Yanaginobanba Street. This later moved to and prospered in an area north of where Higashi Honganji Temple stands today. In 1641, with the development of Kyoto, the entertainment district was shifted once more to an area that was then west Kyoto, and known as Sujakuno. The official name of the district was Nishishinyashiki. However, due to the turmoil resulting from the sudden relocation, the new entertainment district was commonly referred to as Shimabara, after the Shimabara peasant uprising in Kyushu.
